Your voice is extremely sensitive to outside influences of both a physical and emotional nature. Also, muscle tension in the neck, tongue, lips, diaphragm and throat, just to name a few, interferes with the singing process.
Voice Training concentrates on your vocal cords. By reducing tension in these other muscles your cords become free to be developed in their flexibility and strength. The goal is to make you a better singer. Flexibility leads to control; and vocal control equals more power.
Another important element of Voice Training is the coordination between your chest voice and your head voice, finding the passage between the two and building a bridge that you can sing over with confidence.
The exercises you will learn are trimmed to strengthen your vocal cords, to give your voice more power & stamina, to prevent hoarseness & loss of voice at gigs & rehearsal and to reduce muscle tension that can make singing more difficult. For rock and pop singers the traditional method of singing lessons with a piano and scales just isn´t enough.
The muscles in your larynx are no different to the other muscles in your body; they can be strong, weak, flexible or stiff.
Your goal as a singer should be to achieve the optimum balance between this flexibility and strength. Voice Training contains exercises that stretch and strengthen these tiny muscles (your vocal cords) and also the immediate surrounding areas. Your larynx shouldn´t be moving up and down with every high and deep note you sing nor should it be locked in place by muscles that only hinder your performance.
Voice Training has nothing to do with articulation, support, posture or anything else including breathing: if you sing properly you´ll breathe properly! Through repetition your vocal cords can be conditioned to be totally independent of the adjacent muscle groups. Your cords can be gently stretched and strengthened so that your singing voice is as relaxed as when you speak naturally. When this situation arrives, you can sing anything you choose with complete confidence; the musical style is your decision. Whether it´s rock, pop, musicals, jazz, country or opera the result will be a lighter, well balanced tone in all your registers.
